President Obama signed an executive order in January which will close the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba within one year. President Obama previously stated that his goal is to provide all detainees with full civilian trials in US courts, but since then has backtracked, reinstituting the use of military tribunals in some cases.
These detainees may end up being housed in federal prisons in the continental United States or released to their home countries. Three quarters of the American people are opposed to the release of Guantanamo detainees in the US, and roughly the same amount oppose giving former detainees taxpayer money to help them return to society.
Despite this, some detainees have ended up in Bermuda, living in a beach house complete with a swimming pool. Others are being sent to secure facilities in Palau, a remote Pactific island associated with the US. Still, the administration is struggling to relocate the detainees and after months of delay there remains no clear plan for handling dangerous detainees.
The Pentagon estimates that 62 former Guantanamo Bay detainees have rejoined terrorist groups, including the head of Al-Qaeda in Yemen. We have less than six months to prevent many of these prisoners from being put in a position where they can return to their past activities.
Please sign the petition at http://www.studentsforvictory.com/savelives and ask President Obama and Congress to ensure that no detainee at Guantanamo Bay will ever be given the chance to kill innocent people again.
