Last year, the president announced plans to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other alien enemy combatants captured on the battlefield in civilian courts. In response, on Feb. 2nd, 22 US Senators introduced bipartisan legislation cutting off funding for the trials of the 9/11 conspirators in civilian court.
According to Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), “Military commissions, with the additional procedural rules added by Congress and enacted by President Obama, are the most appropriate venue for trying individuals adjudged to be enemy combatants. The first step in addressing this matter in a very serious way is to support Senator Graham’s legislation and move away from the idea of trying these dangerous law-of-war detainees as common criminals.”
Call your Senators today by calling the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask that they cosponsor S. 2977, and ensure that the security of the American people is protected from inappropriate trials in domestic criminal courts.
